Over the course of my life I have come to realize the gift that life really is, and what a miracle it can be. Part of the cool thing about life is that it is different for everyone, but we all share common battles that we fight in our own way along the journey.
With recent conversations I would like to blog first about the topic on most Provo college students minds CARS! Yes, cars. Let me explain...
I think my Bishop said it well this week. "Dating is like shopping for cars"... Let me paraphrase this modern day parable for you. Apparently when guys look for cars online they look for fancy ones like Lamborgini and Porsche, etc. These are pretty cars, but they aren't practical, they are out of their price range, and they are never purchased. When a guy actually buys a car they shop for a used car on KSL.com or at a used car lot. These cars are better for them and will actually help them get where they are going. Cars that are practical and affordable.
When searching for a date we should be looking for someone who is good for us. Perhaps this is offensive to some girls as we are being compared to a used car, but I think the point is clear. Girls, polish yourselves and try to be a used lamborgini! haha
Perhaps another anology from the same meeting will help us understand better what dating is actually like. Do you remember the pioneer story about the woman who was crossing the plains and her oxen died. Many of us feel like our dating life is like that oxen... DEAD! hahahah The lesson, either die on the single plains and never make it to marriage paradise, or gather the faith to raise your dating life in hopes that you will some day rest from the labors of dating peril!
What is a date? My roommate once said it is a two hour opportunity to get to know a child of God. Now the two hour opportunity can be torture if it is not going well, or it can be Heavenly if it is. Guess like the good ol country song says, "if you're going through hell keep on moving" The same principal can be applied to dating. If we keep moving from date to date we might get out of hell before the devil even knows we are there!
Why do we have to go through the torment, I mean process of awkward moments, wardrobe malfunctions, mocking from the great and spacious apartments full of people we walk past on the way to the car? What is the point to all of it? Since I have very little experience on the matter I turn to experts to help me know why we do it all. The only answer that I like out of all I have heard is because in the end we can be part of a family and help bring children into the world. (Doesn't that sound like fun!?)
