LDS Women and the priesthood: my meager opinion
In The Book of Mormon Alma desires to speak with the trump
of God and to shake the earth crying repentance to every people. But he rebukes
himself saying, "But behold, I am a man, and do sin in my wish; for I
ought to be content with the things which the Lord hath allotted unto me."
(Alma 29:1-3)
For some reason in the past year or so there has been an
increase in LDS women seeking more than the Lord has allotted unto them. They
seek to gain the priesthood, wear pants to church, and demand
"equality" from their leaders. Each of these wishes aren't in
themselves sins necessarily. (I mean clearly the Lord is not going to smite
someone down for wearing pants to church.) It is my personal opinion that the
real question comes back to the doctrine of the church.
In a world of confusion it is important to know where you
stand. Are you for me or against me asked the Lord? When you prayed about the
Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith, did you receive an answer? Did God tell you
that he called a prophet and apostles? Do you trust God? What does God have to
say about the matter?
This causes us to look at the doctrine of God concerning
gender roles. In "the family, a proclamation to the world" we learn that "Gender is an essential
characteristic of individual, premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose."
When I think about the eternal identity and purpose of a
woman I personally feel overwhelmed with the sense of responsibilities placed
before me. The best women that I know are wives and mothers. What is their
purpose? To teach their children the gospel of Jesus Christ, to support and sustain
their husbands in the priesthood, to be an integral part of the largest women's
organization in the world, to serve people around them, to be involved in
humanitarian work, to be prayer warriors, to develop their own talents, keep
their houses clean, and on top of that some of them also work. I ask myself
ought the women of the Savior's church be content with the many wonderful
blessings and opportunities the Lord has already given them. What if instead of
seeking for more responsibilities we became the best at all of our current responsibilities?
I think of Sister Margret Nadauld's words " Women of
God can never be like women of the world. The world has enough women who are
tough; we need women who are tender. There are enough women who are coarse; we
need women who are kind. There are enough women who are rude; we need women who
are refined. We have enough women of fame and fortune; we need more women of
faith. We have enough greed; we need more goodness. We have enough vanity; we
need more virtue. We have enough popularity; we need more purity."
The Lord needs us to stick with the doctrine we have
learned. We can question things and I believe we should. However, I believe we
are always backed up to a wall of faith. I know for myself that God has a role
for women. I know that we are not any less important in his eyes than the men
around us. I know for myself that God will bless us more than we can imagine if
we trust Him and His ways.
I know for myself that women of God have enough
responsibility before God without having His priesthood, and I feel that we
ought to be content with the things we have and focus on making the most of
those things.
