Mormon Women and the Priesthood
As you watch the news recently, you may have noticed the
media trying to portray that Mormon women want the priesthood. I think it
should be made clear that this not the stance of most Mormon Women! There is a
small group of extremists going around claiming that they are ready to receive
the priesthood. Many of these sisters say that they are active LDS women. If
this is true, why are they directly going against the council of the prophet
who has asked them not to demonstrate on temple square?
One of the unique
positions that we as members of the church have is to know that here is a
prophet on the earth today and that God speaks through that prophet. In the Doctrine
and Covenants we read “whether by my voice or the voice of my servants it is
the same” (Doctrine and Covenants 1:38) The way that I understand this
scripture is that if the prophet and first presidency of the church are
speaking it is the same as if the Lord is speaking. Well, the council has been
given. Therefore, in my mind as an active Mormon, the Lord has spoken.
“What I the Lord have spoken I have spoken and I excuse not
myself” In other words, what God has said either himself, or through his
servants has been declared and should therefore allow for no excuses. Active
members of the church enjoy many great blessings from following the council of
the prophet. It saddens my heart that anyone especially someone who knows these
blessings, would want to receive fewer by going in direct conflict of council
given to them.
In Isaiah we read, " For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord" (Isaiah 55:8) I would simply ask all
women who are seeking for the priesthood to reconsider this scripture. Are your
desires and wishes really from God, or are they from yourself? What are your
motives really? What blessings are you missing from being directly disobedient?
Personally as a Mormon Woman I feel very
blessed with all the opportunities that I already have to serve and to give in
the Savior’s church. I believe that Heavenly Father has a special place in his
heart for women. He loves us very much. I honestly don’t feel denied any
blessings. I support and sustain the leaders of the church and their decision! To
the world, please know that those women are the minority! Very few of us are
seeking more than what the Lord has allotted unto us.
