Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of shape
Sometimes in life you find yourself in what could become a sticky situation.Tonight I was asked to teach a class about Google+. Beforehand a presentation was made and practiced, activities were prepared, and it was scheduled to be smooth sailing. Fast forward to 3:45 PM, the precise moment when I showed up to give this said presentation. I walk in and upon further inspection I realized that the room I was teaching in didn't have a computer. Within about 6 minutes students started showing up. So, what did I do? That's right I went old school and taught a class about social media using a white board and a marker.
What I learned from this situation comes back to the age old adage, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade, or "Come what may and love it" from Joseph B. Wirthlin. I think that life can be a lot like that classroom at times. We get going on a path and we think we have everything planned out and prepared and then the good Lord uses his sense of humor and makes it completely different then we expected. Think about the moments you've had recently where you were just utterly shocked at what came next.
Honestly, I think that the Lord is simply trying to teach us to trust Him and to learn to laugh when things get tough. Trusting in God can be difficult when things aren't as they seem, but the really beautiful part about trusting God is that He can see the whole picture and he knows exactly how it will turn out. He also knows the lessons that we will learn along the way.
While I was explaining how to use Google + without a computer I was able to think of the tool in a different way. I was able to think outside the box when explaining. It helped me to develop new ideas and strategies for teaching other people. It reminded me how to be confident in front of a large crowd of people who look to you as the expert even when you feel unprepared to be the expert. It also taught me that being prepared makes it more possible to be flexible.
Applying these lessons to life we can see our trials as these tools. They helps us see the value of our lives differently, and maybe help us notice the important parts. We can gain added confidence in God and His will and plan for our lives as we see it work out even when we thought it difficult or impossible. We can be prepared spiritually, emotionally and physically so that when life happens we don't crumble up and stop functioning.
The moral of the story, lemonade tastes good, and loving life is possible no matter what the situation. So, my challenge to you, is to try and see what God is trying to teach you. Be aware of chances to grow, and ultimately, think outside of your usual box. It really does bring added perspective! :)
